Means, Williams Log Double-Doubles In 72-55 Win Over ETSU
1/5/2017 8:22:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – Sydni Means and Alex Williams each notched a double-double as the Mercer women's basketball team blew past ETSU, 72-55, to open Southern Conference play. Means tallied 15 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists as she came close to a triple-double and Williams had a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth-career double-double.
Â
Kahlia Lawrence led Mercer in scoring with 25 points as three Bears recorded double-digit nights. Mercer improved to 12-3 overall and 1-0 in SoCon play as it gears up to host Chattanooga on Saturday.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer looked to have control early as the Bears took a 7-2 lead less than two minutes into the game. ETSU wasn't going to give up that early and used an 8-4 run to cut Mercer's lead to 11-10 with 2:59 remaining in the first period. Another 10-6 spurt put the Bucs up 20-17 at the end of the quarter. After ETSU opened the second period with a 4-2 spurt, Mercer used a 6-0 run to retake the lead, 25-24, with 5:36 left in the half. In those final minutes of the half, there were four ties and one lead change as the Bucs outscored the Bears 8-7 and the teams entered halftime with a 32-32 tie.
Â
The first six minutes of the third quarter looked to be much of the same back-and-forth from the end of the first half, but with 4:04 on the clock, Lawrence hit a jumper that sparked a 10-4 Mercer run to close out the period. The Bears entered the final 10 minutes with a 49-44 advantage, tying the largest lead either team had reached thus far.
Â
The Bucs opened the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws, but Mercer quickly embarked on a 19-4 run that lasted 5:39 and put the Bears up 68-50. Mercer scored 11 unanswered points to end the run. As the game slowed down in the final three minutes, ETSU outscored Mercer 5-4 to move the final score to 72-55 in the Bears' favor.
Â
NOTABLES
On opening the SoCon with a win:
"I've been nervous for a week on this game because ETSU is such a good team. ETSU has played in a lot of close games that they have won. They've got two of the best guards in the conference. I felt like it was going to be a tough game, and it was, especially in the first half."
Â
On the second half:
"I think Kahlia started hitting shots, and whenever Kahlia's hitting shots, it gives us a lot of confidence. I thought Sydni played exceptionally well, scoring, obviously assists as always. And then Alex, she averages maybe six, seven points, and she had a career high."
