Bears Falter Against Chattanooga, 74-56
1/7/2017 4:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – Kahlia Lawrence scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Bears, but the Mercer women's basketball team fell to Chattanooga 74-56 on Saturday afternoon. KeKe Calloway also scored in double digits with 18 points.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer and Chattanooga began the game fairly evenly matched, as the first seven minutes of play featured three ties and no lead larger than three points. With 2:41 remaining in the first quarter, Jasmine Joyner hit a layup that sparked a 7-2 Chattanooga spurt to close out the period and put the Mocs up 15-10. Calloway opened the second period with a trey for the Bears, but the Mocs answered with a 13-0 run that gave them a 28-13 advantage with just 2:27 left in the first half. The teams traded baskets until halftime and Chattanooga entered the locker room with a 35-23 lead.
Â
The Mocs used a 16-5 run to start the third quarter and give them their largest lead of the game, 51-28, with 5:05 left in the period. Mercer showed renewed energy when Alex Williams hit a layup to spark an 11-2 spurt that closed the gap to 14 points, 53-39, at the end of the third quarter. Mercer refused to give up and kept Chattanooga from gaining any more momentum in the fourth period. Unfortunately, the Bears were unable to mount a comeback and ultimately fell 74-56.
Â
NOTABLES
On the grit the team showed in the fourth quarter:
"We talked about that over and over in timeouts and halftime. I'm disappointed that we got in that position where we had to show that grit, but Chattanooga played awfully well. They're a great basketball team and they played awfully well. We'll watch some film tomorrow, we'll move forward and all will be fine."
