MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University men's tennis team picked up a 5-2 win over Jacksonville State on Thursday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
"I thought all the guys played with good intensity today," said Assistant Coach Tim McLane. "We played with a belief that we were going to win and we took care of business. Full credit to Jacksonville State; they fought and made it tough on us. We need to work on closing sets and matches, but overall it was a solid effort."
Mercer won the doubles point to start the match with a 1-0 lead and Sam Philp soon made it 2-0 for the Bears with a 6-3, 6-3 win at flight two. Pedro Wagner defeated Nicolas Guillon on court one, cutting Mercer's advantage to 2-1.
Anderson Scarpa and Arnav Mohanty each won their three-set matches to clinch the win for the Bears. Both Scarpa and Mohanty won the first set and were forced to play a third set after dropping the second. Fernando Guardia won at flight five and Arsav Mohanty lost a three-set match to close out play and move the score to 5-2.
Next up, Mercer will take on No. 56 Auburn in a doubleheader on Friday in Auburn, Ala. The first match is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
