
Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Kennesaw State, 13-5

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University women's lacrosse team downed Kennesaw State, 13-5, on Sunday afternoon at Five Star Stadium. Erica Coyne led Mercer with a season-high five goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kennesaw State scored the first goal of the game, but Haleigh Brooks scored for Mercer 11 seconds later after grabbing the draw control and sprinting down the field to tie the score, 1-1. The Bears scored five unanswered goals in the remainder of the first half, including a man-down goal by Gabby Goldberg with just 1:11 on the clock, lifting Mercer to a 6-1 lead.
The Owls also scored the first goal of the second half, moving the score to 6-2 just over a minute into the period. Mercer scored the next four goals to stretch its lead to 10-2 with 18:06 to play. Kennesaw State grabbed a goal, interrupting Mercer's momentum, but the Bears found the back of the net twice more, increasing their lead to 12-3. The Owls netted back-to-back scores off a Mercer own goal and a man-up opportunity, again cutting the Bears lead, this time 12-5 with 4:32 on the clock. Coyne scored the final goal of the game with 1:04 left to play, putting the Bears up 13-5.
NOTABLES
- Erica Coyne scored a season-high five goals, which is the most by any Mercer player this season. She also had three draw controls and two ground balls.
- Lindsey Zeltwanger tallied a season-high-tying three assists and added a goal for a total of four points. She also picked up a season-high-tying five ground balls.
- Kate Christian dished out a career-high three assists and scored a goal for a total of four points. She also registered a draw control and a caused turnover, both of which tied her season highs.
- Haleigh Brooks netted two goals and had an assist for three points. She also contributed two ground balls, a season-high-tying two draw controls and a caused turnover.
- Meghan Segreti scored a season-high-tying two goals and tallied two ground balls and a draw control.
- Nawal Alami notched a goal, a draw control and a caused turnover for the Bears.
- Gabby Goldberg also scored a goal for Mercer.
- Audrey Allen led Mercer with a season-high 4 draw controls and also tied her season highs of three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- Audrey Robertson and Katie Brueske each registered three ground balls and a caused turnover.
- Taylor Horner picked up two ground balls, while Kendall Garrett had one.
- Tori Blakeman recorded a ground ball and a caused turnover.
- In goal, Haleigh Wurzel made 21 saves and grabbed five ground balls.
- Kennesaw State outshot Mercer, 31-22, and won the ground ball battle, 43-30.
- Mercer won the draw control by a margin of 12-8.
RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer moves to 5-7 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic Sun play, while Kennesaw State is now 3-8 on the season and 1-2 in league games.
