Men's Tennis Picks Up Win Over Chattanooga, 4-3

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University men's tennis team improved to 3-0 in Southern Conference play after edging Chattanooga, 4-3, on Saturday.
"It was an incredible match," said Head Coach Eric Hayes. "Chattanooga came to play. To win after being down triple team match point shows the heart I have been looking for. We haven't won a match this year after losing the doubles point, so to do that today was clutch. Arnav (Mohanty) and Fernando (Guardia) got two quick points, which was key. Then Anderson (Scarpa) and Arnav (Mohanty) fought from behind to get the win. We will need to show the same fight tomorrow against Alabama State, which was in the NCAA Tournament last year."
Chattanooga won at flights one and three to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead in the match. Fernando Guardia and Arsav Mohanty won their singles matches in straight sets to put Mercer up 2-1 overall.
The Mocs picked up another point with a singles win at flight one, but Anderson Scarpa fought back from an 0-3 deficit in his third set to win and put Mercer back up, 3-2. Chattanooga tied the score, 3-3, with a three-set win at flight two.
Arnav Mohanty also played to three sets, two of which included tie-break points. With the Bears down a triple team match point, Arnav Mohanty was down 6-3 and he fought back to win his third set tiebreaker 8-6 and clinch the win for Mercer.
Mercer is in second place in the Southern Conference standings, just behind ETSU, which is currently 4-0 in SoCon play.
Next up, Mercer will take on Alabama State on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET in Montgomery, Ala.
