GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Mercer University men's tennis team grabbed a 4-3 win over UNCG on Wednesday afternoon to improve to 4-0 in Southern Conference play and claim a share of first place in the league standings.
Mercer and ETSU are now tied for first place in the SoCon as each has a 4-0 record in league matches. The Bears have also won seven of their last eight matches.
"We found a way to get a win today," said head coach Eric Hayes. "The doubles point was key, especially winning it being down a match point at number one. Sam (Philp), Arsav (Mohanty) and Ruben (Vanoppen) did a great job in singles. We have a quick turnaround before playing a very strong Samford team on Friday."
Mercer took a 1-0 lead in the match after winning the doubles point with wins at flights one and three. At flight one, the Bears were down a match point, 6-5 in a tiebreaker that would decide the doubles point, but Arsav Mohanty and Ruben Vanoppen battled back for a 7-6 win.
UNCG won the first singles match to knot the score, 1-1, and followed with a second singles win to take a 2-1 lead overall.
Sam Philp won at flight one to tie the score again, 2-2, but the Spartans picked up another point to go back up, 3-2. Arsav Mohanty grabbed a 6-2, 6-3 win at flight five before Vanoppen used a 6-4, 7-5 victory at flight six to clinch the match for Mercer.
Next up, Mercer will take on Samford on Friday at 12:00 p.m. ET in Birmingham, Ala.
