Men's Tennis Drops Match To Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mercer University men's tennis team fell to Samford, 5-2, on Friday afternoon.
"We played a tough one today," said head coach Eric Hayes. "The Doubles point was very important and we let it slip away. We showed a heck of a lot of heart in singles, we just came up short. We've got a quick turnaround for ETSU on Sunday, but we'll be ready."
Samford was able to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 2-0 after a singles win at flight five.
Sam Philp put Mercer on the board with a 6-4, 6-0 win at flight one and Anderson Scarpa tied the score 2-2 with his 6-2, 6-3 victory at flight four.
The Bulldogs pulled ahead, 3-2, with a win at flight two and the final two singles matches were sent to three sets each. Samford picked up its fourth point of the match with a win at flight six and closed out the match and moved the final score to 5-2 with a win at flight three.
Next up, Mercer will conclude its road trip at ETSU on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
