GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Mercer University baseball team was unable to capitalize on a great pitching performance, falling to UNCG, 1-0, in the nightcap at the UNCG Baseball Stadium on Thursday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG made its first of the game count, as Dillon Stewart hit a solo shot to left for a 1-0 lead after four innings of play. That was the only scoring, as both pitching staffs shut down two of the nation's top offenses.

KEY TO THE GAME
Mercer outhit the Spartans, 6-2, but was unable to push any runs across. The Bears advanced the runner in just two of their 17 opportunities, while batting 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

PLAYER OF THE GAME
Connor Herd had a strong start for the Bears despite being tagged with his third loss of the year, surrendering just one hit, the solo shot, in five innings of action while striking out three batters.

NOTABLES

Mercer's pitching staff limited the nation's leaders in batting average to just two hits in the contest, the Spartans lowest mark this season.
The Bears got scoreless outings from Taylor Lobus and Austin Lord as well as Conard Broom, who left the bases loaded in the sixth before tossing a one-two-three seventh.
Kyle Lewis stretched his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the sixth inning.
Danny Edgeworth finished 2-for-3 with a walk at the plate to push his on-base streak to 19 games with his 15th multiple hit performance of the year.

RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer falls to 34-21 overall and 15-8 in the Southern Conference, while UNCG moves to 37-18 overall and 15-8 in league play.

The Bears will put it all on the line tomorrow, May 20, as they wrap up the regular season with a winner-take-all bout with UNCG for the SoCon regular season title. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
