KENNESAW, Ga. – Maddie Clark scored on a pair of penalty kicks, but it wasn't enough to rally Mercer as the women's soccer team fell to Kennesaw State, 4-2, on Friday evening.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kennesaw State took an early 1-0 lead after Brittney Reed scored off a long shot from about 25 yards out in the eighth minute. Cassidy Kemp added a pair of goals for the Owls in the 34th and 38th minutes as KSU took a 3-0 advantage that it carried into halftime.
Â
Clark scored her first goal of the match off a penalty kick in the 62nd minute to cut KSU's lead to 3-1. Kennesaw State answered less than a minute later to go back up three, 4-1. Clark was called on again in the 65th minute and once again the redshirt senior came through as she netted her second score of the night to bring the score to 4-2. Both teams had some chances in the remaining 25 minutes, but neither was able to find the back of the net again.
Â
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Clark led Mercer with two goals off four shots and three shots on goal. She now leads the Bears with three goals this season.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Kennesaw State led in shots, 19-7, but the corner kick margin was an even 6-6.
Â
NOTABLES
"It was a tale of two halves tonight. We came out very flat in the first half and I give credit to Kennesaw State; they took advantage of that, jumped on us early, caused some issues for us and got up three goals, which is a tough task to come from behind. At halftime, we challenged the players and made some adjustments. We told the players they have to want it the second half. They came out with a renewed spirit and I was very proud of the effort in the second half. We made it interesting but unfortunately came up a little short. Hopefully the second half effort will carry into a tough game on Sunday with a good and organized Tennessee Tech."  – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
Â
RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer moves to 1-2 overall, while Kennesaw State improves to 2-0-1.
