Mercer Falls To Western Carolina in SoCon Opener
9/23/2016 9:39:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – The Bears dropped a 1-0 match to Western Carolina on Friday evening as the women's soccer team opened Southern Conference play. Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Western Carolina scored in the 31st minute when Anna Marie Mellis sent a header into the goal after connecting with the ball off a corner kick. Mercer had a few looks at goal, but the Catamounts carried their 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Â
Mercer had a chance to tie the match in the 59th minute after Western Carolina committed a foul in the box and the Bears were awarded a penalty kick. The ball went towards the top of the net and the WCU keeper knocked it out of the way at the last second, keeping the score 1-0. The Bears notched three shots in the final 30 minutes of play, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer led Western Carolina in corner kicks, 6-3.
Â
NOTABLES
- Cristina Mursuli made five saves in goal for the Bears, including four in the first half.
- Katelyn Dimopoulos and Jamilah Tejan led Mercer with two shots each.
"We played a very good and organized Western Carolina team tonight and give them credit, they made the most of an opportunity in front of goal on a corner kick. We had to chase the game from that moment on. I thought we pressed them well and created some chances in the second half, but when you miss a PK and you have six corner kicks, you hope you can get one of those to go in. Unfortunately for us, the ball just didn't go our way. We'll regroup tomorrow and get ready for a tough ETSU game on Sunday." – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
Â
RECORDS UPDATE
- Mercer: 2-6-1, 0-1-0 SoCon
- Western Carolina: 4-6-0, 1-0-0 SoCon
Mercer will conclude the opening weekend of conference play on Sunday at 2 p.m. when the Bears host ETSU at Bear Field.
