Bears, Trojans Play To 0-0 Draw
9/9/2016 10:15:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – The Bears' defense was solid for 110 minutes as the Mercer women's soccer team went to double overtime against Troy and played to a 0-0 draw.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears and the Trojans played a fairly even first half as Troy tallied six shots and Mercer notched four. Troy gained more control of the ball in the second half, logging another six shots, but the Mercer defense held strong and kept the Trojans from finding the back of the net. The overtime periods were much of the same, as Troy recorded three shots in 20 minutes and Mercer took two shots.
Â
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Sterre Harsveld Van Der Veen was solid for Mercer as a holding midfielder. She helped to disrupt the Troy attack and was good in distributing the ball. Harsveld Van Der Veen also helped the Bears to win some balls in the air.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Troy led Mercer in corner kicks, 15-3, and the Mercer defense stepped up to keep the Trojans from having a good look at goal on their set pieces.

NOTABLES
- Leah Cochran earned her second straight start and spent 45 minutes in goal, contributing to the Bears' clean sheet. Cochran also made a pair of saves in the first half.
- Cristina Mursuli played 65 minutes in goal and made a save in the second overtime period to keep the match from ending.
- Maddie Clark led Mercer offensively with three shots.
QUOTABLES
"I felt our effort tonight was great. We defended well for 110 minutes today and to go now 200 minutes, including the last game, without giving up a goal is great. Defensively, we're gelling and starting to click like we did last year. I'm happy with that overall. Troy is a very athletic and well-balanced team and they are well-coached and organized; and I thought we did very well stuffing away a lot of chances. Defensively on corner kicks we were solid, so I'm happy with that. We're going to go back to work on Monday morning, work on some offensive stuff and get us prepared for a national power in Florida State. Hopefully we're peaking at the right time." – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
Â
RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer moves to 2-4-1 overall, while Troy is now 4-3-1.
