Bears Roll Past Paladins, 76-52
1/19/2017 10:11:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MACON, Ga. – Kahlia Lawrence scored 21 points and Sydni Means and Alex Williams each added 19 to lead the Bears as the Mercer women's basketball team steamed past Furman, 76-52, on Thursday night.
Â
Means dished out a career-high 14 assists and Williams pulled down 11 rebounds as the pair recorded double-doubles for the second time in conference play.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears started the game hot, outscoring the Paladins 13-4 in the first five minutes, which included 11 unanswered points. Mercer worked its way to a 17-4 lead before the Paladins rattled off three consecutive three-pointers to cut Mercer's lead to 18-13 with 2:02 left in the first quarter. The Bears outscored the Paladins 4-2 in the final minutes of the period to stretch their lead to 22-15. Furman opened the second quarter with an 8-3 spurt, but Mercer nearly shutout the Paladins in the final six minutes of the period. The Bears closed out the half with an 8-1 run that increased their lead to 33-24 before entering the locker room.
Â
The teams went back-and-forth in the third quarter, trading baskets at the beginning and each going on a 7-0 spurt towards the end. Furman outscored Mercer 18-17 in the period to cut the Bears' lead to eight, 50-42, entering the final 10 minutes of play. Mercer dominated the fourth quarter, connecting on 12-of-18 attempts from the field. After trading baskets in the first two minutes, the Bears went on a 24-6 run to close out the game and keep the Paladins from attempting a comeback. Mercer scored the final nine points of the game to move the score to 76-52 as time ran out.

NOTABLES
General thoughts on the game:
"We had a really strong start and a great finish; this was one of our most complete games. For whatever reason, our players get hyped for Furman and we have a lot of respect for them. We had two players with double-doubles; I thought Sydni (Means) was spectacular. Furman really did a good job of keeping Kahlia (Lawrence) from getting the ball, yet she still had 21 points. They would try to take something away from Sydni and then she'd find Alex (Williams) rolling or something. Amanda (Thompson) was a monster again on the offensive glass and KeKe (Calloway) had a big rebounding night. It was as close to a complete game as we've had this year."
