Bears Defeated by Samford, 3-1, on Road
10/11/2017 11:31:00 PM | Volleyball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Morgan MacGilvary posted her eighth double-double of the season along with a career-best 23 digs as Mercer fell short in a 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 24-26, 22-25) loss to Samford in Southern Conference play Wednesday night.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-21) |Â Paige Alsten started the night off with a bang, producing a kill for the Bears. Mercer led most of the set with a difference expanding up to four points, however Samford would take the lead for the first time with a 19-18 advantage. Samford's lead quickly ended when the Bears went on a 5-1 run to finalize the opening set. Three of the final five points came from MacGilvary, who finished the first set with six kills.
Set 2 (19-25) | A quick two-point lead by the Bulldogs would extend throughout the second set as Samford tied the match, 1-1. Despite six kills by Alsten, the Bears could not tighten their four-point deficit (16-20). The Bulldogs would finalize the set with back-to-back kills.
Set 3 (24-26) | Set three began with a four-point streak by the Bulldogs. Mercer retaliated with a 12-3 run to take the lead at 12-7. After tying the set up at 21, Samford jumped ahead for the remainder of the set. After a kill by Alsten and an attack error by the Bulldogs, the Bears would tie the match up again at 24. However, an attack error by the Bears sealed their fate for the set point.
Â
Set 4 (22-25) | Mercer's Emily Krogman, Claire Waliczek, and Alsten produced a kill apiece to take the early lead of the fourth set (4-3). Back-and-forth points were earned by both teams until Samford captured the lead after tying the match at 14 and created a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 19-14. Alsten's final kill of the night would bring the Bears within one point (22-23) but it would not be the push the Bears to the set win.

SCHROEDER'S TAKE
"We did a lot of good things tonight. We closed a first set out when we had a lead, which has escaped us so far this year. We just didn't quite make the plays we needed to when we had a chance."
