Mercer Drops Home Match to Furman, 3-1
10/13/2017 9:04:00 PM | Volleyball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer fell to Southern Conference foe Furman, 3-1 (25-12, 23-25, 21-25, 14-25), in its annual 'Pink Out' match on Friday night at Hawkins Arena. The loss was only Mercer's second at home this season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-12) |Â A pair of kills by Emily Krogman and Danielle Faust set the tone for Mercer in the opening set. After a 7-3 run, the Bears extended their lead to 12-5. A 9-1 Mercer run proved to be the finishing blow as Olivia Sass served the final five points. Three blocks constructed by Paige Alsten and Danielle Faust in the final points made it tough for the Paladins to fight back.
Set 2 (23-25) | Furman responded at the start of set two with a 4-1 lead. However, a pair of kills by Morgan MacGilvary and Alsten helped tie the set at 5-5 and eventually give Mercer a lead. The Bears took a 23-22 lead coming out of a Furman timeout, but a service error, Furman ace and attack error halted Mercer's chances as the Paladins stormed back with the final three points.
Â
Set 3 (21-25) | Krogman and Alsten would add a pair of kills to begin set three. However, Furman took control of the rest of the game. A 4-0 run at the end, including a kill a piece by Alsten and MacGilvary, would not be enough for the Bears to pull out the set (25-21).
Â
Set 4 (14-25) |After a service ace from Emilee Wissmach, the Bears couldn't maintain an early lead. Furman set the tone for the remaining of the match with the Bears unable to pull within Mercer's eventual 11-point victory. Emily Krogman added a kill, with the assist by Maddie Nunley, to cut the Paladins lead to nine at 23-14
