10/20/2017 9:38:00 PM | Volleyball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Mercer dropped its first Southern Conference match of the week at The Citadel, falling 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-15, 11-15) at McAlister Field House.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (21-25) |Â Mercer started the opening set strong with a 5-2 run. The Citadel tied the match up at 14 and kept the lead until the end. The Bears would not be able to pull within five points, despite a kill by Danielle Faust that cut the Bulldogs' lead to 24-21.
Â
Set 2 (25-20) | The Bears began set two by digging out of a 7-2 hole. After a 9-1 run, the Bears took the lead 11-8. Mercer was able to extend its lead after another 5-0 run, including a kill by Paige Alsten that would help cap set two 25-20.
Â
Set 3 (22-25) |Â Set three began with back-and-forth points by both teams. However, The Citadel pulled away and created a five-point deficit for the Bears. Mercer tied the match up at 16 but was unable to take the lead, regardless of Morgan MacGilvary's kill to pull the Bears within two points (22-24).
Â
Set 4 (25-15) | A pair of kills by Alsten were the spark for the Bears in the beginning of set four. Mercer extended its lead after making a 5-2 run at the end of the set (25-15), including two service aces and a kill by Emily Krogman.
Â
Set 5 (11-15) |Â Four straight points in favor of Mercer opened the fifth and final set after Alsten (2), MacGilvary (1), and Faust (1) added kills. However, The Citadel climbed back into the major and didn't look back after gaining a three-point lead.

COACH SCHROEDER'S TAKE
"Craig and Stevi are doing a great job with the team [at The Citadel]," said head coach Derek Schroeder. "They had their girls ready to play tonight. I did not, and I have to own that. We are going to continue to look for anyone to make a play late in a set and will continue setting up competitive drills in practice to simulate those scenarios."
RECORD UPDATE
UP NEXT
Mercer will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. to face Wofford in SoCon play. First serve is at 6 p.m. Saturday, as the Bears and Terriers face one another for a second time this season.
