Mercer Falls to Wofford, 3-1 in SoCon Play
10/21/2017 9:54:00 PM | Volleyball
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer came up short in its Southern Conference battle at Wofford, falling to the Terriers, 3-1 (23-25, 25-23, 13-25, 15-25 ) on Saturday evening.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (23-25) |Â A kill by Emily Krogman put the Bears ahead of the Terriers at the beginning of the opening set, 2-1. The two teams were tied at 14-14, but Wofford pulled away with the set win despite an ace by Morgan MacGilvary and another kill by Krogman that cut its lead to 24-23 late.
Set 2 (25-23) | Mercer started set two strong with a pair of kills by Paige Alsten and Krogman. Mercer kept the lead until the Terriers tied the match up at 15. However, Mercer held on to the lead and capped set two with a kill from MacGilvary.
Set 3 (13-25) | The Bears were unable to gain their momentum after a 4-1 run at the beginning of set three. Mercer was unable to tighten its nine-point deficit (13-22), and a 3-0 run at the end of the set would allow the Terriers to take set three.
Â
Set 4 (15-25) | After a 7-3 run made by the Terriers, Mercer would trail the remainder of the game, unable to pull within 10 points. A 6-2 Mercer run, including an ace by Maddie Nunley, at the end of the set would not be enough for the set win.
