Mercer Falls to Samford in SoCon Quarterfinals
10/28/2017 10:54:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mercer ran into a red-hot Samford team Saturday night and dropped a 5-0 decision on the road to the Bulldogs in the quarterfinal round of the Southern Conference Tournament. The Bears were the tourney's seventh seed, while the host Bulldogs were the No. 2 seed.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening minutes of the match were very slow as both teams attempted to get past the early nerves of the tournament. Samford saw the first shot of the game in the 8th minute but freshman goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert was there to make the save. Moments later, the Bulldogs struck first when Korrie Sauder capitalized on a one on one opportunity after a defensive breakdown at the back, beating the keeper for the 1-0 lead in the 10th minute.
The Bears responded quickly, earning their first shot of the match when freshman midfielder Brie Pavol rocketed a ball towards goal from deep outside the box but was denied by the Bulldogs' keeper. Mercer saw their first real chance of the first half when Ally Fordham ripped one from the edge of the box, but it deflected off the crossbar in the 22nd minute.
Less than a minute later, Mercer had several bodies inside of the box, with one Bear falling, appealing for a penalty but no call was made by the referees. As the ball lingered in the box, forward Valeria Bermeo was able to get a touch on the ball, sending it towards the frame, but the Samford keeper was there to make the save once again.
In the 24th minute of play, Samford doubled their lead with Jermaine Seoposenwe curling a ball past the keeper from nearly 35 yards out. The Bulldogs continued to apply pressure, scoring their third first-half goal in the 33rd minute on a header off of a corner kick. The Bears entered the halftime break trailing, 3-0.
The Bears came out of the locker room very aggressive to start the second half, controlling more possession of the ball. In the 46th minute, midfielder Jasmine Spence fired one from deep but was just high of the target.
Mercer continued to push bodies further up the pitch in search of getting a goal on the scoreboard. They nearly did just that as Alina McCue saw a chance on goal but keeper Anna Maddox was there to deny her in the 55th minute.
Goalkeeper Payton Jamieson was subbed in in the 61st minute, seeing action for the first time since the Bears' match against Presbyterian (09/15/17). Mercer earned their first corner kick in the 64th minute but Hayley Moore was unable to find anyone inside the box.
In the 81st minute of play, Samford added their fifth goal after a ball ricocheted off the post and was rebounded in by Erin Bonner. The Bears were denied once again by the woodwork in the 87th minute when Isabel Rothschadl's shot hit the crossbar. Mercer was unable to find the back of the net as their season came to an end, falling 5-0 to tournament host Samford.
NOTABLES
• For the sixth straight season under Coach Economopoulos, the Bears have posted a .500 or better season. In Economopoulos' tenure, Mercer has not experienced a losing season.
• Junior defender Haley McDuffee was given a yellow card in the 26th minute.
• Mercer is now 7-3 in Southern Conference Tournament play since joining the league in 2014.
• The Bears were denied twice on the night by the crossbar.
RECORDS UPDATE
• Mercer: 10-10-1 (3-5-1)
• Samford: 13-5-2 (8-0-1)
QUOTABLES
"Credit Samford tonight. They are a quality team. We came out a little flat in the opening half and gave up an early goal and that helped set the tone for them. We had a great chance early on for a goal to make it 1-1 but the shot went off the cross bar. Credit them for getting an early lead. We came out with good effort after halftime. Unfortunately, they got that fourth goal, but I was proud of our effort the second half. Overall, I was proud of the girls the whole season. We played a lot of freshmen and I felt at times we overachieved but we still have a lot of work to do." --Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
