Mercer Slips to UNCG in SoCon Showdown
10/28/2017 5:58:00 PM | Volleyball
MACON, Ga. – Mercer dropped its second match of the week, this time to Southern Conference foe UNCG, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-19), Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Arena. The Bears are winless (0-2) against the Spartans this year, having lost 3-1 on Sept. 29 in Greensboro, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (23-25) |Â Mercer trailed for much of the opening set, until a kill by Paige Alsten provided the Bears with an 11-10 advantage. Mercer stayed in front until the Spartans tied the set at 18. Despite the Spartan's narrow advantage, the Bears tied the match up at five different times (19-19, 20-20, 21-21, 22-22, 23-23) before falling to UNCG on an attack error.
Set 2 (23-25) | Neither team could pull away from each other over the first 20 points as the Spartans held on to an 11-9 lead. UNCG would eventually extend its lead to six points after registering a service ace at 20-14. The six-point advantage proved too much to overcome for Mercer, despite Emily Krogman's kill to pull the Bears to within two (24-22).
Â
Set 3 (19-25) |Â Sarah Stewart would spark the third set with a kill to help the Bears capture the early lead. However, an eventual 5-2 Spartan run would allow UNCG to pull ahead, 7-6. The Spartans would never relinquish the advantage from there, extending their lead to five points and eventually claiming the six-point victory.
Â
NOTABLES
Mercer will continue its five-match home stretch, welcoming Chattanooga on Friday Nov. 3 at 6 p.m. for Senior Night.
