Mercer Claims 3-2 Home Win Over Chattanooga
11/3/2017 9:18:00 PM | Volleyball
Paige Alsten posts 20 kills, Emily Krogman notches double-double
Â
MACON, Ga. – Mercer withstood a late rally by visiting Chattanooga and claimed a 3-2 (25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 19-25, 15-13) Southern Conference win on Friday at Hawkins Arena.
Â
The Mocs (13-14, 6-7 SoCon) rallied back to force a fifth set after Mercer (9-17, 3-10) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in its first conference win in over a month.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-22) |Â Chattanooga got a quick jump on the Bears, scoring the first two points of the match. After the Mocs led 11-8, the Bears went on their own 4-0 run to take the lead for the first time in the set, 12-11. After a neck-and-neck battle between the two teams, Mercer would extend its lead on a 5-1 run, capped by two straight kills from Paige Alsten for the 25-22 win.
Set 2 (25-22) | An opening service ace by Emilee Wissmach would be the spark for the Bears' second-set victory. Neither team would be able to extend its lead by more than two points until a kill by Alsten and a Moc attack error, which earned the Bears the advantage at 13-10. The final seven Bear points would earned by five kills from Alsten (4) and Emily Krogman (1).
Set 3 (19-25) | Chattanooga began set three with a bang after taking a 6-2 lead. Mercer fought back to tie the match up at 13 after another Alsten kill. Despite a Krogman kill at 24-19, the Bears were unable to hold onto the third set.
Â
Set 4 (19-25) | After a 9-6 jump by Chattanooga, Mercer trailed for remaining of the set, with an exception of a tie at 11 after a service ace by Maddie Nunley. The Bears would be unable to tighten the six-point gap, marking a 25-19 Chattanooga win to tie the series up at two.Â
Â
Set 5 (15-13) | Despite a Moc kill to start the final set, Mercer sparked a 5-0 run beginning with an Alsten kill. Chattanooga was able to tie the match up at 12 before a 3-1 Bear run finalized the match as Nunley sealed it with a kill.

COACH SCHROEDER'S TAKE
"I really felt like tonight was a night where everyone was playing hard for one another. It wasn't always pretty and it wasn't always perfect but we were just playing so hard for each other that we made just enough plays to win."
