MACON, Ga. – Mercer fell short in its final home match of the season, losing 3-2 (25-19, 17-25, 29-27, 23-25, 11-15) to Samford in Southern Conference play Wednesday night.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-19) |Â Mercer started the night on a high note with a 25-19 set win. Mercer led Samford by seven points at 17-10. A 3-0 run, beginning with a kill and a service ace by Emily Krogman and ending with a Sarah Stewart kill, stretched the lead to 23-16. Paige Alsten closed the opening set, adding a kill to the board.
Set 2 (17-25) | The Bears began set two by clawing out of a hole, trailing the Bulldogs by five at 11-16. Krogman punched in a kill to temporarily stop a Samford scoring run, but it would not be enough as the Bulldogs ran with a 5-1 spurt to lead 21-13. Kills by Alsten and Krogman tightened the set up to 24-17 before Mercer fell in the next point.
Set 3 (29-27) | Emilee Wissmach recorded three straight aces to begin set three. The Bears would hold the lead until the Bulldogs tied the set up at 22. After back-and-forth points, Mercer held on to the set win, notching the final two points off of Bulldog attack errors.
Â
Set 4 (23-25) | Danielle Faust notched a kill to begin set four, but the Bulldogs quickly responded by outscoring the Bears 7-2. A 5-0 Mercer run would put the Bears back in the lead by one point (10-9), but the Bulldogs answered back to take the lead. Mercer tied the match up at 23 after a Krogman service ace, but it would not be enough to stop the Bulldogs.
Â
