Bears complete two-game sweep of the Tigers
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Five Mercer pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout while Charlie Madden and Matt Meeder came up with key hits to highlight a 6-0 win over Savannah State on Wednesday night at Tiger Field.
Mercer improved to 11-3 overall and completed the sweep of its two games against intrastate foe Savannah State, which dropped to 6-8. It is the Bears' third win in a row.
After Chase Burks tossed four innings of one-hit ball while striking out six batters, Josh Knies (1-0) earned the win with 2.2 innings of relief. Three other Bears – Robert Broom, Christian Vann and Zach Graveno – logged time on the mound to help Mercer pitch its second shutout of the season.
With the game scoreless through four innings, Matt Meeder came through with a two-run single to right field that scored Madden and Jackson Ware. Both runners reached on errors before Meeder made the Tigers pay for the mistakes.
A three-run home run by Madden, his team-leading sixth of the season, put the game away in the eighth. Danny Edgeworth added a RBI-single in the frame for Mercer's sixth run.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Edgeworth continued his strong start to the season with his seventh multi-hit performance, going 3-for-5 with one run scored, one RBI and one stolen base. The senior has five games of at least three hits so far.
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer's staff struck out 11 Tigers en route to the shutout victory, led by a career-high (6) from Burks. Knies and Graveno had two apiece while Broom added a pivotal one that ended a bases-loaded threat from Savannah State in the seventh inning.
COACH GIBSON'S TAKE
"This was a good win for our team to earn on the road against Savannah State tonight. Our pitching staff did a tremendous job of keeping their hitters off balance and we added some quality defense behind those guys. Matt [Meeder] came up with a big hit to break it open and Charlie [Madden] launched a ball as far as you'll see one go."
