Coyne Scores Four as Bears Best Monarchs, 10-8

NORFOLK, Va. – Erica Coyne scored her 100th career point and led the Bears with four goals on the day as Mercer downed Old Dominion, 10-8, on Sunday afternoon.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Mercer is in a tie for second place in the ASUN standings at 7-1 in league play. The Bears still have to face fourth-ranked Furman and Coastal Carolina, who is tied with Mercer for second place. The top two teams will earn a first-round bye in the ASUN Tournament, May 4-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was back-and-forth as neither team led by more than one goal and both scored just three goals, leading to a 3-3 tie after 30 minutes of play. Kelly Hagerty started the second half scoring less than a minute into the period, putting Mercer up 4-3 off a free-position goal. Old Dominion answered with a pair of goals to retake the lead, 5-4, with 25:54 to play.

With 23:47 on the clock, Meghan Segreti became Mercer's fifth player to find the back of the net as she ignited a 4-0 run that put the Bears up 8-5 less than 10 minutes later. During the run, Coyne scored a goal and Kate Leone added two. The Monarchs slowed the Bears down with a pair of goals to cut Mercer's lead to 8-7 with 9:12 remaining. Coyne answered ODU with a pair of her own goals, putting the Bears back up three, 10-7. Old Dominion scored the final goal of the game to move the score to 10-8, but Mercer held on in the final minutes for the win.
