Four Mercer pitchers looked strong in low-scoring affair
MACON, Ga. – Four Mercer pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts and allowed only seven hits in a 3-2 Southern Conference loss to Western Carolina at OrthoGeorgia Park Friday night.
Â
Mercer (35-15, 17-6 SoCon) mustered only three hits offensively and saw a ninth-inning rally halted with a game-ending 6-4-3 double play. Western Carolina (28-26, 15-8) clinched second place in the SoCon regular season standings with the series win.
Â
Starting pitcher Austin Cox, who entered the game with a designated pitch count, allowed three runs on two hits over four innings. He struck out seven, including the final three batters he faced. Both hits Cox allowed were to the Catamounts' Nobu Suzuki, who connected for a two-RBI single and a solo home run.
Â
Mercer earned one run back in the bottom of the first on a RBI-groundout by Charlie Madden, but two Bears were stranded after Matt Meeder, Alex Hanson and Ryan Hagan loaded the bases with no outs. Jackson Ware pulled Mercer within one again in the fifth with his eighth home run of the year. Cox, Christian Vann, Kevin Coulter and Robert Broom all saw action on the mound. Coulter was particularly effective, striking out three over 3.2 scoreless innings.
Â
Coach Gibson's Take
"Our pitching staff was great tonight and did what it took to win a ball game; no question about that. Offensively, we have to do a better job. We're going to come out and be better tomorrow and end the regular season the right way."
Â
Player of the Game
Coulter's third relief appearance of the year was a strong one; he scattered four singles and did not issue a walk over 3.2 innings. Two of the sophomore's three strikeouts came in the top of the ninth before he was relieved in favor of Broom.
Â
Pitchers of Record
The Bears will recognize 10 outstanding seniors prior to Saturday's series finale at OrthoGeorgia Park. First pitch is officially slated for 2:15 p.m.
