HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Mercer received the Barrett-Bonner Award this week for the second consecutive year as the Southern Conference wrapped up its 2017 spring meetings on Friday.
Â
Mercer laid claim to the Barrett-Bonner Award for the second straight year and is only the second school (along with former SoCon member Davidson) to win the award in multiple years.
Â
The Barrett-Bonner Award is given to the Southern Conference school that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on the league's academic honor roll. The award was first presented in 1994, for the 1992-93 academic year. The award is named after Col. John G. Barrett, faculty athletics representative at VMI from 1965-87, and Dr. Francis W. Bonner, faculty athletics representative at Furman from 1968-90.
Â
The culmination of the league meetings also witnessed the official presentation of the Bob Waters Male Athlete of the Year to Mercer soccer player Will Bagrou and the Southern Conference Presidential Scholar postgraduate scholarship to Mercer softball player Taylor Rodgers.
Â
The four-day meetings were attended by the institutional presidents and chancellors, athletic directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives, as well as Southern Conference staff. The league's football and men's and women's basketball coaches also held meetings.
Â
Among the other business conducted, the league agreed to adopt instant replay in football, with schools able to opt in beginning with the 2017 season. All nine league football teams must have replay capabilities by the 2019 season.
