Mercer Tallies Second Straight Victory With 1-0 Verdict Over Montevallo
8/20/2017 5:10:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – Mercer's women's soccer team was propelled to a 1-0 victory over Montevallo when freshman Sarah Adcock scored her first collegiate goal at the 61st minute, Sunday at Bear Field. It was the second consecutive shutout win for the Bears, who opened regular season play Friday night with a 1-0 blanking of Troy on the road.
STAT OF THE MATCH
The Bears outshot the Falcons 19-3 in the match, with five shots on target.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Adcock scored the lone goal of the match in the second half to lift the Bears to victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer was very aggressive in the first half of the match, outshooting their opponents 12-1. Senior forward Valeria Bermeo nearly put the home team ahead in the 18th minute when she fired one towards target but was denied by the crossbar. Mercer continued to apply pressure throughout the first half forcing Montevallo's goalkeeper to produce three saves. The two teams entered the half in a scoreless tie.
Midfielder Alina McCue linked up with Adcock in the 61st minute, when the freshman drilled one pass the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Mercer continued to press for another goal but was unable to find the back of the net again.
The Bears' defense held tight for the final minutes of the match to give them back to back 1-0 victories to start the season.
NOTABLES
• This is the first time the Bears have started the season 2-0-0 since 2013
• Goalkeepers Leah Cochran and Joryn Ebert split time defending the net for the Bears, each seeing a half on the pitch
• Freshman Sarah Adcock scored her first collegiate goal at the 61:03 mark
• Mercer forced Montevallo's goalkeepers to come up with five big saves for the Falcons
• Alina McCue earned her first point of the season when she assisted Adcock on her goal
• Valeria Bermeo led the team with five shots on the day, one on target
• The Bears will host the Mercer Invitational next weekend, in which they will face Siena on Friday, Aug. 25, at 8 p.m., followed by a meeting with Kennesaw State on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 6 p.m.
QUOTABLES
"Overall we are happy to get the result today. Credit Montevallo; they came out with a good game plan and made it difficult for us. I was proud of the girls and how they kept battling and taking shots. We took 19 shots I think; we need to be a little more clinical in front of the goal and create better chances in front of goal. But, overall to come out of the opening weekend with two wins is a real testament to the girls and how hard they've worked." --Head Coach Tony Economopoulos
