MACON, Ga. – Mercer women's soccer team fell 2-0 to Siena in a first-round matchup of the Mercer Invitational Friday night at Bear Field.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Despite the score-line, Mercer outshot Siena 23-12 throughout the match.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Freshman Sarah Adcock led the squad in shots with six on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears battled the visiting Saints throughout the contest but couldn't capitalize on potential scoring opportunities. Both teams challenged early on in the match but it wasn't until the 30:23 mark of the first half that the Saints were able to break through with a goal by Jayanna Monds on an assist by Darby D'Angelo.
Siena found the back of the goal once more three minutes later when Madison Vasquez drilled one through the net to give the visiting team a 2-0 lead. That margin stood throughout the remainder of the match as the Bears weren't able to break through a stingy Siena defense.
NOTABLES
• Goalkeepers Leah Cochran and Jordyn Ebert split time defending the net for the Bears, each earning three saves a piece
• The Saints' goalkeeper Taylor Dorado was strong at the net, making 14 saves on the evening
• Freshman midfielder Brie Pavol and senior forward Valeria Bermeo had three shots a piece on the night for the Bears
• Sophomore midfielder Sterre Harsveld Van Der Veen provided a solid spark for Mercer off the bench, playing 38 minutes with two shots
