Mercer Falls 2-0 to Kennesaw State Sunday Night
8/27/2017 8:18:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – Mercer women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to Kennesaw State in the final matchup of the Mercer Invitational Sunday night at Bear Field.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Despite the score-line, Mercer outshot Kennesaw State 10-9 throughout the match.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Freshman Rhett Cauilan led the squad in shots with three on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams struggled to get things going on the offensive side early in the match. Kennesaw State struck first when Ashtah Das crossed one into the box to connect with Ida Hepsoe for the opening goal in the 28th minute.
Less than ten minutes later a foul was called against the Bears in the opposing box providing the Owls with a penalty kick. Abby Roth took the kick for Kennesaw State and was able to beat goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert, extending the Owls' lead to 2-0.
The Bears came out very aggressive in the second half attempting to cut into the deficit. Sophomore Megan Delmonico nearly fired one in for the Bears in the 70th minute from outside of the box but sent her shot just wide of the target.
Despite outshooting the Owls 7-3 in the second half, Mercer was unable to find the back of the net and the match ended 2-0.
NOTABLES
• Goalkeepers Leah Cochran and Jordyn Ebert split time defending the net for the Bears, each earning one save on the night.
• The Owls' goalkeeper Tiffany Sornpao was strong at the net, making seven saves on the evening.
• Senior Isabel Rothschadl and sophomore Jasmine Spence provided a solid spark for Mercer off the bench, playing 38 minutes and 42 minutes respectively.
QUOTABLES
"It was another tough loss tonight, but I am very proud of how the team reaced both games this past weekend when we were down at the half. We've just been a little bit unlucky in front of the goal but after 90 minutes on both Friday and Sunday, I felt we were the better side, we just couldn't put away our chances. We are young which has its learning curve but I feel that this team is progressing in the right direction and believe the future will be very good."--Head Coach Tony EconomopoulosÂ
RECORDS UPDATE
• Mercer: 2-2-0
• Kennesaw State: 2-0-2
NEXT MATCH
• The Bears will next face Loyola Chicago when they travel to Milwaukee, Wis. for the Marquette Invitational, beginning on Friday, Sept. 1.
