Mercer Falls Twice in Charleston on Saturday
9/16/2017 9:30:00 PM | Volleyball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Mercer fell to College of Charleston, 3-1 (09-25, 25-22, 18-25, 09-25), and Appalachian State, 3-1 (26-24, 22-25, 20-25, 16-25) on Saturday in the final day of the Charleston Invitational, wrapping up a three-match road trip. The Bears suffered three losses in Charleston and return to Macon with a 4-7 overall record.
HOW IT HAPPENED (College of Charleston)
Set 1 (9-25) |Â The Cougars immediately went on a 9-1 run, which started the pace for the first set of the afternoon. Paige Alsten was a perfect 2-for-2 in attacks, however her performance was not enough to bring the Bears to a set victory.
Â
Set 2 (25-22) |Â An added intensity pushed Mercer to the set two win. A 4-1 start was sparked by two kills apiece from Emily Krogman and Alsten. Eighteen of the 25 points came from kills by the Bears. Alsten led with six kills and Krogman with four. MacGilvary added three kills while Claire Waliczek, Gabbi Meyering and Danielle Faust had two each.
Set 3 (18-25) |Â The third set started strong with a service ace by Waliczek. The Bears stayed in the lead until the Cougars tied the match up at 10-10. The Bears never straying from a two-point deficit until College of Charleston reached a 16-13 lead. The Cougars went on to make an 8-2 run to finish the set.
Set 4 (9-25) |Â The Cougars began with a 9-3 run against the Bears, which then led into a 12-2 run to finalize the win against the Bears. Two kills from Alsten and one from each Krogman and Faust did not produce enough offensive spark for the team.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED (Appalachian State)Â
Set 1 (26-24) |Â The Bears starting strong with a kill from Alsten and a service ace from Krogman. After trailing for the majority of the set, the Bears tie it up at 17-17 and claimed the lead from there. MacGilvary secured the win with her fourth kill of the match.
Set 2 (22-25) | A quick 5-0 run at the beginning of the set was not enough juice to push the Bears until the end. The Mountaineers swiftly retaliated with their own burst of offense that would drive them to the match-tying win. A point by Gabbi Meyering would be the last source of offense by the Bears.
Â
Set 3 (20-25) |Â An early lead by Mercer was quickly squared up by Appalachian State at 7-7. The Mountaineers pulled ahead from there en route to winning the third set, despite a late run from Mercer that brought the set within four points.
Â
Set 4 (16-25) |Â Trailing the Mountaineers, the Bears battled back to from a 10-point deficit before falling. Krogman tallied three kills in the set.
