Macon, G.A. – Mercer was defeated by Wofford, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-21), at Hawkins Arena on Friday evening to record its first conference loss of the season. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (14-25) |Â The Terriers started the first set with a 12-4 spurt. The Bears clawed within four before Wofford went on another 6-2 run to stretch its lead back to eight. Mercer was unable to climb out of its early deficit to end the first set 25-14.
Â
Set 2 (21-25) |Â A pair of kills by Morgan MacGilvary put Mercer ahead by one at a 7-6 score before Wofford rattled off four unanswered points, to reclaim the lead for good. A kill by Emily Krogman brought the Bears within one, 22-21. However, the Terriers closed the set on a 3-0 run to claim the four-point victory.Â
Â
Set 3 (21-25) |Â The Bears started the final set with an assisted block by Paige Alsten and Krogman. Mercer and Wofford went back-and-forth for the majority of the set until three unanswered points by the Terriers forced a Bears' timeout, trailing 19-17. Mercer continued the seesaw battle with Wofford, ultimately falling 25-21 in the final set. Â
NOTABLES
"My hat's off to Wofford for coming into the game very determined following its conference-opening loss on Wednesday. They played a great match and made it difficult for us to do the things that make us well because they were serving the ball so well. I was impressed with how well we passed tonight. However, we were unable to generate offense after we served or received."
RECORD UPDATE
Mercer will host its second conference match of the weekend to The Citadel, Saturday Sept. 23 at 3 p.m at Hawkins Arena.Â
