Bears Complete 3-0 Sweep Over Bulldogs
Â
Macon, G.A. – Mercer defeated Alabama A&M, 3-0 (25-6, 28-26, 25-23), at Hawkins Arena on Saturday afternoon to record its first sweep of the season. Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-6) |Â Mercer jumped out with a 15-3 spurt to set the pace in the opening set. The Bears maintained the double-digit lead for the remainder of the set, cruising to the 19-point victory. Taylor Spence and Danielle Faust each recorded a 1.000 hitting percentage in the opening set.
Â
Set 2 (28-26) |Â Neither team could pull away from each other in the second set as both squads never led by more than three points. The Bears overcame a late 22-19 deficit, outscoring the Bulldogs 9-4 to claim the pivotal set. Spence recorded two kills in the final three points to lift Mercer to the 2-0 advantage.
Â
Set 3 (25-23) |Â Mercer completed the sweep battling back from another late three-point deficit, this time trailing 18-15. The Bears finished the game on a 10-5 run, sparked by four unanswered points to reclaim the momentum in front of a raucous crowd, claiming the two-point victory.
 Â
NOTABLES
"I really liked our ability to close matches late in the set. We were down a little bit in set two and set three but managed to find a way to win. We're trying to change the culture and attitude here more than anything. It's two matches against one team, but I think we can take some big lessons from it."
RECORD UPDATE
Mercer will travel to Oxford Miss., to compete in the Ole Miss Classic. The Bears will face Northwestern St. on Thurs. Sept. 7 at 5 p.m., followed by two games on Saturday Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. against Austin Peay and 7 p.m. against Ole Miss.
