Bears Sweep Bulldogs in Mid-Week Battle

Mercer downs The Citadel 3-0, ending five-game losing streak
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Mercer (9-9, 2-5 SoCon) blanked The Citadel 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-23) in Southern Conference action on Wednesday evening.

The victory was Mercer's second conference win of the season and snapped a five-match skid. Paige Alsten led the charge while reaching a career milestone with her 300th block.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-22) | The first set began in Mercer's favor after a pair of miscues by the Bulldogs and a kill from Brittany Major. After seven ties throughout the first set, Mercer took control of the frame and finished it off with a 6-2 run, highlighted by three kills from Roberta Todd. Todd tallied five of her match-high 15 kills during the opening set.

Set 2 (25-22) | The Citadel outscored the Bears 5-1 to start the second set. After a Mercer 5-1 run, the two teams were knotted at 6-6. The Bulldogs took the lead for the following six points before Mercer regained control. Five ties occurred before the Bears put the set away with a 7-4 closing run that included two kills apiece by Annie Karle and Todd.

Set 3 (25-23) | Mercer started out the third set in a hole as The Citadel took a 6-2 advantage. Todd led a Mercer rally, however, with four kills in an 8-2 run to give the Bears a 10-8 lead. Mercer would later rally once again to tie the set at 22-22 before Karle pushed Mercer to the sweep with the final two kills of the match.

Mercer returns to Hawkins Arena to host ETSU at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 in SoCon action. The match will kick off the Jay's Hope Fundraiser; fans are asked to bring quarters to the match to support the cause.

- Paige Alsten's 300th career block moved her into the top five all-time at Mercer. She had four blocks in the match, a team-best.

- Mercer earned more assists (43), service aces (4), digs (45) and total blocks (11) compared to the Bulldogs (3 service aces, 43 digs and 10 total blocks).
- Roberta Todd notched a match-high 15 kills and 10 digs for her third double-double of the season. The outside hitter also had one service ace.
