Major Sets Career-High in Four-Set Victory

Bears topple Terriers, 3-1 for annual Orange Out event
MACON, Ga. – Mercer (12-10, 5-6 SoCon) marked its third-straight victory over Wofford Friday evening at Hawkins Arena. The Bears overcame the Terriers, 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22) for their annual Orange Out event.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (25-21) | Brittany Major jumpstarted the opening set, earning five kills to lead the Bears to an 8-2 advantage. Mercer proceeded to ignite a 5-3 run to push the Black and Orange to its largest lead of the night (14-5). Wofford then outscored the Bears, 15-8, to pull within two points (22-20). Roberta Todd, Paige Alsten and Major all notched one kill apiece to push Mercer to the set win. Â Â

Set 2 (22-25) | Todd began set two in Mercer fashion by providing the first kill of the set. After neck-and-neck play, the Terriers took the front at 8-7. The Bears forced two tie-ups before reclaiming the lead 15-14 with an Alexia Morey kill. Wofford generated a 6-1 run to regain the lead and move on to the 25-22 set win. Â

Set 3 (25-20) | Set three favored the Bears, whom ignited a 6-2 advantage, which included an Emilee Wissmach service ace. The Terriers were only allowed one tie (9-9) before Mercer generated a 7-2 run comprising of two Major kills. Wofford was able to tighten the Mercer lead to two points until Major and Karle connected for a point each, sealing the set 25-20. Â

Set 4 (25-22) | Mercer began set four trailing the Terriers for 18 rallies until Todd was able to knot the set up at nine. The Bears proceeded to tie the set up once more before claiming the lead 14-13 for a few rallies. Although Major and Alsten were able to produce five points, the Terriers reclaimed the lead, 15-14. The Bears secured the set on a 5-0 run, which included two Gibson service aces to close the victory.

NOTABLES
- Mercer recorded 61 kills to Wofford's 44 including a higher attack percentage at .245. The Bears also recorded eight service aces while the Terrier's connected for only four.
- The Black and Orange registered 68 digs to the Terrier's 51 digs. Mercer rang in 57 assists to Wofford's 41.
- Brittany Major recorded a career-high 20 kills against the Terriers. The freshman hit for a career-high .514 which included 35 attacks and only two errors.
- Three additional Bears added double-digit kills including: Annie Karle (14), Paige Alsten (13) and Roberta Todd (11). These three combined for one assist, one service ace, 15 digs and three total blocks.
- Maddie Nunley earned her ninth double-double of the season, registering 49 assists and 11 digs.
- Amber Gibson and Megan Smith were shy one dig from both reaching double-digits. Gibson recorded a career-high four service aces.
- Emilee Wissmach tied her second season-high notching a team-high 20 digs for the night. The sophomore also tied her season-high in assists, producing five for the Bears.
