Bears Break Win-Streak, Fall 3-1 to Furman

Mercer drops third home match of season
MACON, Ga. – Mercer (12-11, 6-6 SoCon) broke its three-game win streak, falling to Furman 3-1 (23-25, 28026, 19-25, 18-25) at Hawkins Arena Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (23-25) | Roberta Todd notched the first point of the match, giving the early advantage to the Bears. However, the Paladins quickly gained the lead after a 7-3 run. Furman held onto the front for the remainder of the match despite two tie-ups caused by a Megan Smith service ace (20-20) and a Paige Alsten kill (21-21).

Set 2 (28-26) | Brittany Major sparked set two for the Bears, registering the first kill. After four quick lead changes, Mercer took control of the set adding a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 15-10. An 11-4 Paladin run allowed Furman to reclaim the lead, 21-19. Mercer forced five more tie-ups before scoring three-consecutive points to close the set 28-26.

Set 3 (19-25) | Set three favored the Bears, whom ignited a 9-4 advantage, including two Major kills. The Paladins proceed to outscore Mercer 9-1 before the Bears notched three-straight points off of Furman attack errors. Despite two kills apiece from Alsten and Annie Karle, the Paladins outscored Mercer 12-6 to close out the set. Â

Set 4 (18-25) | The Black and Orange registered the first point of the final set, giving Todd her eleventh kill of the match. Furman tied the set up eight times before finally taking over 15-11 on a 7-0 run. Despite Karle generating three more kills for the Bears, Mercer could not take back the lead and would fall 25-18.

- Mercer is 6-3 at home this season, falling to UNCG (3-2), ETSU (3-1) and Furman (3-1).
- Annie Karle registered a team-high 15 kills and added four digs and one block assist.
- Paige Alsten and Roberta Todd notched double-digit kills for the sixth-consecutive match. The two combined for only four attack errors, two assists, 10 digs, and six total blocks.
- Maddie Nunley notched a team-high 45 assists and was one dig shy from a double-double. The sophomore also added three kills, one ace, and two block assists.
- Emilee Wissmach led the Bears with a game-high 22 digs. Amber Gibson earned a second team-high 10 digs.
- Alexia Morey recorded a tied her second season-high of five total blocks. The junior tied with Alsten for a team-high.
