Mercer notches sixth road win of the season with 2-0 victory
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Mercer Men's Soccer squad opened the Southern Conference season with a bang, shutting out VMI in Lexington, Va., by the final score of 2-0. With the win, Mercer improves to 7-2-2 on the season and 1-0-0 in conference play. The Keydets fall to 1-9-1 on the campaign and 0-1-0 in league play.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Mercer dominated the possession of the match as evident by the shot count. The Bears registered a season-high 34 shots, including 12 shots on target. The Orange & Black held VMI to just six strikes with two on frame.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Jake Mezei had a foot in both of the Mercer goals this afternoon, earning the nod for man of the match honors. The senior captain assisted in Trevor Martineau's goal in the eighth minute to put the Bears up 1-0. Mezei then doubled the Bears' lead to two in the 82nd minute with his first goal of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer struck first in the eighth minute as two-time SoCon Player of the Week, Trevor Martineau, found the back of the net for the fifth time this season. Martineau's goal was assisted by Mezei as the 6'4" freshman forward rose above the defenders to head the ball into the back of the net.
The Bears tallied 10 more shots in the opening half but could not stretch their lead, taking the 1-0 advantage into the locker room.
Mercer doubled its lead on the 17th shot of the second half as Mezei found the back of the net for the first time this season. The Bears had six attempts turned away in the second stanza until the senior captain collected his first strike of the year to put Mercer ahead 2-0. The Bears held VMI to just two shots in the final 45 minutes of play to walk away with the win.
