Calloway nets 21 to guide the Bears in Stegeman Coliseum
ATHENS, Ga. – The Mercer Bears dropped a nail-biting 67-60 decision to Georgia on Wednesday night at Stegeman Coliseum, falling to 3-4 on the season. With the win, Georgia improves to 4-3 and stretches its winning streak over Mercer to 22 consecutive games.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Georgia's size proved a factor in tonight's battle, outrebounding the Bears by the final count of 50-30. Caliya Robinson led the way for Georgia with 17 rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs grabbed 17 offensive boards en route to 10 second chance points.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer showed up to Athens on a mission, jumping out to a 9-3 lead to force a Georgia timeout. In the first three minutes of play, Shannon Titus made her impact felt with two points, two rebounds and two steals. Linnea Rosendal's with 5:42 left in the quarter forced Joni Taylor to call the timeout to try and slow down the Mercer offense. The Bears kept their foot on the gas, outscoring Georgia 10-8 in the last five minutes for the 19-11 advantage. KeKe Calloway and Amanda Thompson notched six points apiece in the opening quarter, with Calloway banking in a jumper at the buzzer.
Â
The Bears stretched their lead to a game-high 12 points twice in the opening two minutes of the second quarter after jumpers by Rachel Selph and Calloway. The Lady Bulldogs stormed back with a vengeance in the final eight minutes of the second quarter, chipping away at the Mercer lead until taking their own 32-30 lead with 1:10 remaining in the half. Georgia outscored Mercer 24-11 in the second quarter, including 22-5 in the final eight minutes of play.
Â
Mercer proved it was not going to go away quietly in the third quarter. Georgia stretched its lead to seven on three occasions in the third quarter before the Bears closed the quarter on a 9-4 run to trim the deficit to just two points. Calloway scored eight of Mercer's 15 points in the quarter as the senior guard led Mercer to a 15-12 advantage in the third frame.
Â
The Bears outscored the Lady Bulldogs 6-1 to open the fourth quarter, reclaiming the lead and stretching it to three points. However, Georgia scored five unanswered to sway the momentum back in favor of the home squad, forcing a Mercer timeout with 7:10 remaining. The two competitors duked it out over the next two minutes with Mercer clinging to a one-point edge (56-55) with just over five minutes remaining. The Lady Bulldogs broke through with a 9-0 run to stretch their lead to a game-high eight points with 3:10 left to play. The Bears cut the Georgia lead down to 64-60 with 1:12 left to play but were unable to find the momentum to overcome the late deficit.

NOTABLES
COACH'S CORNER
Final Thoughts:
"We started the game about as well as we could with a 19-11 lead. I was proud of our start and that was exactly what we needed. We struggled in the second quarter once they started to pound the ball inside and then came out in the third quarter with the intensity and emotion that we knew we could win this game. I thought we played as hard as we could but we have to hit shots down the stretch. Taja Cole was guarding KeKe so tight at the end of the game, so someone has to be ready to step up and take the shot when we need it."
Â
On the ability to force turnovers inside:
"Amanda has been able to come away with steals her entire career. She is a competitor and her defense was exceptional tonight. Rachel and Amanda battled defensively, but again we have got to hit big shots at the end of the game."
