She's Got CLASS
On Friday afternoon, KeKe Calloway was named a Senior CLASS Award candidate, joining Sydni Means as back-to-back Mercer student-athletes to be named to the list. Calloway's on-court accolades have earned her a spot in the Top 30 candidates, while also being the only SoCon representative on the list. The field will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February with the winner being announced during the 2019 NCAA Women's Final Four this spring.
Â
Feels Good to be Home
Mercer has only played inside "The Hawk" twice so far, splitting its first two games with Florida and UCF. The Bears have played three true road contests and two neutral-site games. Mercer's contest against Kennesaw State will start a string of three consecutive home outings for the Orange & Black. Mercer will also welcome Florida State (Dec. 5) and Charlotte (Dec. 9) into Macon before heading back on the road before the holidays.
Â
Saturdays are for the Bears
Mercer has yet to play a Saturday game until its matchup with Kennesaw State. The Bears have seen success on Saturday's in the last three seasons. Last year, the Bears finished 9-1 on Saturday with the one loss coming to Georgia in the NCAA Tournament in Athens. Mercer is a combined 27-6 in the last three seasons when playing on a Saturday. The matchup with the Owls will be one of nine contests on Saturday this season.
Â
Last Time Out
Mercer fought tooth-and-nail with the Georgia Lady Bulldogs on Wednesday in Athens, Ga., looking to avenge its five-point loss in the 2018 NCAA Women's Division I Tournament. The Bears started out on top with a 19-11 first quarter led by KeKe Calloway and Amanda Thompson. However, Georgia responded with a 24-11 second quarter to take the five-point lead at the break. Mercer didn't let the momentum slip away much longer, cutting the Lady Bulldogs lead down to two, setting up a dramatic fourth-quarter finish. The Bears were able to hang with Georgia despite the Lady Bulldogs' size, taking the one-point lead over the home squad with just over five minutes remaining. The Bears then went cold from the floor, knocking down one shot in the final five minutes as Georgia outscored Mercer 12-4 down the stretch to claim the 67-60 victory.
Â
KeKe Calloway led Mercer with 21 points on 10-of-17 from the field. Meanwhile, Amanda Thompson and Shannon Titus chipped in for 12 points apiece. Titus led the Bears in rebounds with a career-high seven boards.
