11/9/2018 9:56:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Calloway knocks down a team-high 20 points in season opener
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Mercer Women's Basketball season began with a tough 69-54 opening loss at Wake Forest on Friday night in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Bears were led in scoring by KeKe Calloway with 20 points, while Amanda Thompson chipped in 10 points and 12 boards. Â
Â
STAT OF THE MATCH
The Demon Deacons finished the game shooting .500 (26-52) from the field, including knocking down 7-15 from beyond the arc. The Bears concluded the season-opener shooting just .359 (23-64) and .333 (4-12) from the charity stripe.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Amanda Thompson had to play amongst the trees tonight and left her mark in the game, finishing with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The senior forward corralled a game-high seven offensive boards, just three offensive rebounds shy of the entire Wake Forest squad.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Deacs scored the first eight points in the game before KeKe Calloway nailed a stepback jumper for the Bears' first basket of the season. Wake Forest extended its lead to nine before back-to-back Mercer buckets trimmed the advantage to four. The Deacs concluded the quarter on a 9-2 run to take the 22-11 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
Â
The second quarter jumped back-and-forth as the two squads tallied 17 points apiece. Wake Forest started the frame on a 9-2 spurt to reach an 18-point lead, its largest of the half. The Bears began to chip away at the Wake Forest lead, thanks to consecutive layups by Calloway and an and-one conversion from Rachel Selph. Trailing 39-24, Amoria Neal-Tysor sent the Bears into the locker room with a bit of momentum after converting a four-point play.
Â
The third quarter was all Wake Forest as the Bears were outscored 18-8. After Amanda Thompson netted the first basket of the second half, the Deacs went on a 15-0 run to stretch their lead to 54-30. The Orange & Black would end the quarter on a 6-3 run with baskets by Selph, Calloway and Thompson.
Â
The fourth quarter belonged to the Bears, outscoring the home squad 18-12, including 7-0 in the final 1:37 of play. Mercer concluded the game on a 10-2 run led by consecutive threes from Linnea Rosendal, tying Karen Hickman for seventh all-time in program history for career triples.

NOTABLES
COACH'S CORNER
On the play of Amanda Thompson:
"I thought Amanda played a really solid game all the way around. Wake Forest is taller than us in every position and somehow one of the smallest players on the floor gets seven offensive rebounds. I was really proud of her effort tonight."
Â
On having players gain experience:
"Ally is important to our team because she is a combo player. She is going to need to feel comfortable in numerous roles this season. Amoria, Jaron and Summer will continue to grow quickly because our nonconference schedule is very difficult with a handful of games in such little time."
