Bears Downed in Season Opener Against Liberty
2/10/2018 6:00:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
MACON, Ga. – Mercer opened its 2018 season hosting Liberty at Five Star Stadium on the cloudy Saturday afternoon. The Bears dropped the home opener 7-14 to the Big South opponent.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer's opening season started out bad, after senior goalkeeper Haleigh Wurzel was subbed out due to a quick injury. Freshman, Iseabal Cryne subbed in to lead the Bears the rest of the contest. The first half began with Mercer control, leading the first five minutes 2-0. The Lady Flames lit their fire scoring two goals in the next consecutive five minutes. Mercer extended their lead by another two goals, only to have the Lady Flames retaliate in the final minute of the half to tie the contest at four.
Erica Coyne began the second half with a hat trick, earning her third goal off three shots. Liberty took the lead after scoring three consecutive goals in less all within one minute. With 19 minutes remaining of the second half, Liberty slowed down the tempo in hopes of keeping their three-point lead. Attempting to rally within the final five minutes against the Lady Flames, Kelly Hagerty scored her first goal of the season to pull the Bears back within five points. However, Liberty held off the intensified Mercer offense to seal the final.
