Bears Fall in West-Coast Battle at Fresno State
2/16/2018 9:58:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
MACON, Ga. – Mercer fell in the front leg of its trip to California with a 15-11 defeat at Fresno State on Friday in Fresno, Calif. The Bears (0-2) won the draw control battle, 15-13, and Erica Coyne led the team with four goals, but it was the Bulldogs who earned their second win of the season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer started in a two-goal deficit after Fresno State scored twice within the first six minutes of play. The Bears responded strongly, however, as Caitlin Smith (two goals) and Kate Leone (one goal) put Mercer ahead within the following five minutes of action. A Mercer foul would lead to a tying goal by the Bulldogs at 3-3.
Â
Lindsey Zeltwanger notched her first goal of the night with 14 minutes left in the first half to regain the lead, but a 3-1 Bulldog-run closed the half, giving Fresno State a 6-5 advantage heading into the intermission.
Â
Mercer started the second half with an assist by Smith to Erica Coyne, who netted her second of four goals on the day to tie the game at 6-6. The senior attacker would find the net again two minutes later to gain Mercer a short-lived lead, only to see Fresno State rally with a 4-1 run. Mercer tied the game at 10-10 with 10:52 remaining, but another Bulldog run gave Fresno State a four-goal advantage that it never surrendered.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Coyne led Mercer's offense with four goals off four shots to go along with her five draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover. This marks the senior's second hat trick of the season.
