Bears End West-Coast Swing with Loss at California
2/18/2018 5:59:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
BERKELEY, Calif. – Mercer fell in the back end of its trip to the west coast with an 18-8 defeat at California on Sunday. The Bears (0-3) outgained California in saves, 6-4, while Kate Leone and Sami Van Slyke led the team with two goals apiece, but it was the Golden Bears who earned their second win of the season.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer started with a four-goal deficit after Cal jumped out to an early lead within the first 11 minutes. The Bears responded shortly after as Leone put Mercer on the board with her first goal. Back-and-forth goals between the teams, including one goal apiece by Meghan Segreti and Lindsey Zeltwanger, would allow Mercer to cut Cal's lead to three, but the Golden Bears would add two more to take a 8-3 advantage into halftime.
Â
In the second half, Cal notched the first goal, but it was Mercer's Caitlin Smith who responded with a goal in the following 30 seconds. Van Slyke followed Smith by registering her second career goal of the game and bringing the Bears within four, 9-5.
A 5-0 Golden Bear run was the key point of Sunday's game, giving Cal a nine-goal advantage with 17 minutes remaining. Defender Audrey Robertson, Leone and Van Slyke would each score down the stretch despite the defeat.
