Bears Win North Carolina Showdown

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Kate Leone recorded a season-high five goals to push the Bears past Gardner-Webb in their 16-6 win Friday evening in Boiling Springs, N.C. With the win, the Bears improve to 1-3 on the campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer surged to a 3-1 lead in the first 16:41 of the game, as Meghan Segreti recorded two of her three goals back-to-back and Kendall Garrett registered her first goal of the season. Gardner-Webb notched a goal seven minutes later to pull back within one point (3-2). The Runnin' Bulldogs added a pair of goals in the final two minutes of the first half but Mercer's Lindsey Zeltwanger had the last say, notching the final goal of the half to keep the Bears up 6-4.

The second half got off to a good start when Caitlin Smith notched a free position goal. Gardner-Webb quickly answered two minutes later, marking their first goal of the half. Mercer's next four goals included three from Leone and one by freshman, Sami Van Slyke. Mercer stretched its lead even further with a 5-1 run to pull away for good.
