Schorr, Ball Headline First Round at Martin Downs

Mercer in sixth after four-over-par 292 on Sunday
PALM CITY, Fla. – A pair of Bears rank inside the top-five individually while the Mercer men's golf team shot a four-over-par 292 to claim sixth place after one round at the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate on Sunday.
Stanton Schorr (-4, 68) and Spencer Ball (-2, 70) head into Monday's second round in third place and tied for fifth place, respectively, after impressive opening days of the 2018 spring season. The Bears are well within striking distance of the tournament's top five teams with only a five-shot difference between them and co-leaders Seton Hall and Elon (-1, 287).

With 36 holes remaining at Martin Downs Golf Club's Osprey Course, Mercer sits five shots outside of first place. The Bears are three shots behind host and Southern Conference foe UNCG (+1, 289) but sit well ahead of fellow league opponent Western Carolina (+25, 313).
Mercer on the Individual Leaderboard
Schorr was one shot off his season-low as he led Mercer with a four-under-par (68) opening round. The junior notched six birdies, three on each half of the course, and is only two strokes off clubhouse leader William Harwood (Elon).
Ball – who entered the spring season as the SoCon's four-best golfer (average score of 72.7 over 10 rounds) – continued his steady play for Mercer. The sophomore tallied four birdies on No. 3, 8, 9 and 12 after starting on the first hole.
The trio of Jerry Ren, Brennan Bogdanovich and Kiko Rosete all sit within 44th to 50th after one round.
Coach Kayden's Take
"Stanton and Spencer had phenomenal rounds to lead the way while battling 15 to 20-mile-an-hour winds today," said head coach Kirk Kayden following the first round. "They were impressive and kept us in the tournament.
"Our other guys struggled, but moving into rounds two and three we are focused on avoiding the 'big miss' off the tee, which cost us many shots on both the team score and individual scores. We've got to keep the ball in play off the tee."
Monday's Pairings
Mercer's five will all tee off on No. 1 between 7:30-8:10 a.m. Monday in Palm City. Individuals Nolan Miller (8:30 a.m.) and Tyler Copp (8:40 a.m.) will tee off on hole No. 10.
