Women's Tennis Tops Undefeated Jacksonville State Wednesday

MACON, Ga. –The Mercer women's tennis team handed Jacksonville State their first loss of the season, topping the Gamecocks, 5-2, Wednesday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
The afternoon began with the Bears claiming an early 1-0 lead as taking the doubles competition. Court No. 3 saw Lucie Gutierrez and Marie Mottet defeat Diana Monsalve and Marine Alberteau, 6-2. The No. 2 pairing of Katie Sidor and Anna Sovic clinched the doubles point for the Bears with a hard-fought 7-5 victory Alba Conejero and Malin Buechner. Play on court No. 1 was left unfinished.
Singles play began with No. 1 Sidor rallying back from a set down to top Genevie Ulanday, 5-7, 6-1, 7-5. Mercer picked up another point as No. 2 Schepers won in straight sets over Buechner, 7-5, 6-4. The Bears' No. 3 seeded Mottet continued to stretch Mercer's lead, with a 7-5, 7-6, triumph over Tendero. Court No. 4 saw yet another Bear victory, with Korta topping Monsalve, 7-6, 7-1. The Gamecocks took courts 5 and 6, with Gutierrez falling 6-3, 6-0, to Conejero and Roquebert losing a heartbreaking 3-6, 7-6, 10-7 super tiebreak to Alberteau.
With the win, Mercer improves to 5-3, while the Gamecocks fall to 7-1.
The Bears will have a few days rest before heading to DeLand, Fla. to face Iowa State Saturday, March 3, beginning at 10 a.m.
