Bears Fall in SoCon Opener at Central Michigan
3/29/2018 8:59:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Mercer outscored Central Michigan in the second half but fell to the Chippewas, 15-13, in its Southern Conference opener Thursday at the CMU Lacrosse Stadium.
Kate Leone notched a season-high five goals as Mercer fell to 3-6 overall (0-1 SoCon).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears started the game in a hole after the Chippewas scored back-to-back goals within the first two minutes of action. Sami Van Slyke and Kelly Hagerty notched one goal apiece to tie the game, 2-2, before Lindsey Zeltwanger's 14th goal of the season gave Mercer the lead. A five-goal run by Central Michigan would prove to be a difference-maker, however, as the Chippewas took a 10-7 lead into halftime.
Erica Coyne launched Mercer into the second half with her second goal of the game and cut Central Michigan's lead to two goals. Another run by the Chippewas would halt Mercer's momentum before Leone and Hagerty found the net to make it another two-goal deficit. Two goals by Meghan Segreti would end the game, but not before Central Michigan pulled away.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Kate Leone tied her season-high five goals for the third time this season. The Bear averaged a .807 shots on goal percentage while also adding one ground ball. Leone leads the Bears with 29 goals for the season.
