Bears Rally for Last-Minute Win at Stetson
4/22/2018 2:23:00 PM | Women's Lacrosse
Mercer defeats Stetson, 12-11, with second-half rally
DELAND, Fla. – Erica Coyne scored the go-ahead goal with 34 seconds remaining to cap Mercer's 12-11 come-from-behind nonconference victory over Stetson on the road Sunday afternoon.
The Bears (6-10) outscored host Stetson, 8-3, in the second half to rally from a four-goal deficit at halftime. Mercer concluded nonconference play with the road win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer got off to a sluggish start and trailed by as many as six goals (8-2) despite scores from Lindsey Zeltwanger and Jo Imbriani over the first 14 minutes of play. However, momentum began to shift in the Bears favor toward the end of the first half as Coyne and Michaela Lucas both scored in the final minute to cut Stetson's advantage to four goals.
That shift carried over to the second half when Kate Leone struck with just under 24 minutes remaining for the first post-halftime goal for either team. The former ASUN Conference rivals traded barbs over next 15 minutes before Mercer turned on the jets with the final four goals of the contest. Meghan Segreti, Caitlin Smith and Leone all found the net over a three-minute period before Coyne added the game-winner on an assist by Zeltwanger in the final minute.
