Mercer Earns Fifth Seed in SoCon Tournament

Bears will open conference tournament against VMI at 9 a.m. Wednesday
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer has earned the fifth seed and will face No. 4 VMI on Wednesday, May 23 in the first round of the 2018 Southern Conference Baseball Championship, presented by Holston Gases, at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C., the league announced Saturday.

Mercer (35-20, 11-13) and VMI (26-26, 12-12) will play at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the first game of the tournament's double elimination round. All tournament games will be aired live on SoCon Digital Network.

The Bears took two of three from the Keydets in Macon earlier this season on April 27-29 and own a 2-0 record against VMI in SoCon Tournament play dating back to 2015. This will mark the first time that Mercer has not entered the SoCon Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Bears claimed three straight conference regular season titles from 2015-17.

The winner of Mercer and VMI will face the winner of top-seeded UNCG and No. 8 The Citadel/No. 9 Western Carolina; the Bulldogs and Catamounts will play a single-elimination game on Tuesday to determine who faces UNCG.
