Former University of Denver golfer joins Mercer’s staff
MACON, Ga. – Mercer women's golf head coach Michele Drinkard announced the hiring of Lauren Whyte as her program's assistant coach on Wednesday morning.
Â
A native of St. Andrews, Scotland, Whyte is a recent graduate of the University of Denver, where she played for two years following a transfer from Baylor. Whyte was a key part of the Pioneers' run to their 16th and 17th consecutive NCAA Regionals in 2017 and 2018.
Â
In her time at Baylor, Whyte helped the Bears to a national runner-up finish as a freshman (2014-15), when she defeated Duke's Lisa Maguire in a six-hole playoff to clinch a national championship berth. She joined Baylor's lineup eight events into her freshman season and remained for the final six events, helping the Bears win the Big 12 Conference title and a NCAA Regional en route to the national runner-up finish.
Â
"I'm excited for Lauren to join our family and bring a wealth of playing experience and knowledge of the game," Drinkard said. "My goal was to find an assistant coach who could be a voice for the players on the course, and Lauren will do that very effectively.
Â
"Lauren's experience with the Scottish National Team and deep postseason runs at Baylor and Denver will give her the ability to provide guidance to our golfers in the upcoming season."
Â
Whyte is a former Scottish Girls Under-18 Champion (2012) and represented Scotland in the European Girls Team Championships in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. She finished in the top 10 in 2012 at the European Girls Team Championships and has also represented her native country at the European Young Masters in 2011 and 2012.
Â
"I am extremely honored and excited to join Mercer's women's golf program," Whyte said. "I am fortunate enough to spend my first few years learning from one of the best coaches in college golf and I can't wait to embrace this opportunity."
Â
Whyte will join Drinkard in leading a program that returns all but three golfers from last year's roster for the upcoming 2018-19 campaign. Mercer had its best team finish at the Southern Conference Championships last spring and will be anchored by 2017 All-SoCon selections Payton Schanen and Terese Romeo.
