Jarred Brookins joins the Mercer Men’s Soccer staff as the new assistant coach
MACON, Ga. – Mercer Men's Soccer Head Coach Brad Ruzzo has announced the hiring of Jarred Brookins as the new Assistant Coach on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Prior to arriving in Macon, Brookins spent three years serving as a college liaison and boy's staff coach with the Vestavia Hills Soccer Club in Vestavia Hills, Ala. While in Vestavia Hills, Brookins created and solely operated the College Preparatory Program where his responsibilities included: managing information posted to the website and social media accounts, educating parents and players starting in eighth grade about the college recruiting process, advising high-school aged players as they go through recruiting and acting as the liaison between players and college coaches.
Â
Brookins served as the head coach for the U18 Boys State Championship team in 2017 and led the U19 team to a second-place finish in SRPL and a top finish in the State League Championship. Prior to joining the Mercer staff, Brookins U18 team from this season reached the Region III quarterfinals before falling to the reigning champions FC Dallas Premier.
Â
Brookins also served as the U12 Head Coach where he led the team to State Championships and State League Championships in 2015, 2016, 2017 & 2018.
Â
During the 2012-13 season, Brookins was named the Boys' Varsity Assistant Coach at Vestavia Hills High School. Under his guidance, Vestavia Hills won its first state title since 1995, finishing with a 29-1-1 overall record. The squad still holds Alabama state records from that season, including most shutouts (24), most consecutive shutouts (9) and fewest goals allowed in a season (7).
Â
Some of Brookins top coaching achievements include USYS U18 National League fourth place finish as an assistant coach, becoming the first Alabama boys' team to ever qualify. The Alabama native also claimed seven USYS Youth Soccer State Championships from 2014-18. Brookins also has an AHSAA 6A State Title under his belt and aided Vestavia Hills in finishing ranked No. 7 in the nation in 2013.Â
Â
Brookins graduated from Birmingham-Southern College in May, 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. While at Birmingham-Southern, Brookins played soccer for the Panthers where he was a team captain in 2012, guiding his team to an undefeated Southern Athletic Association record in the regular season. The former Panther also competed in the classroom, garnering a spot on the Athletic Honor Roll from 2010-2012.
