Mercer Dominates VMI In Home Finale

MACON – After honoring the life of a beloved former student-athlete, the Bears (5-7-4, 3-0-1 SoCon) dominated the VMI Keydets (2-11-3, 0-4-0 SoCon) for 90 straight minutes in Mercer's final contest at Betts Stadium in the regular season.
Saturday's match was the third annual Baba Agbaje Memorial Game. Agbaje, a former Bear, tragically passed in April of 2023. Mercer played its 2025 regular season home finale in honor of Baba.
The Bears opened the scoring early in the 13th minute. Fernando Arteaga bagged his third goal off the season straight off a corner kick to give Mercer a 1-0 lead. Junior Casillas would double the Bears' advantage in the 54th minute with his fifth goal of the season.
Mercer outshot the Keydets 27 to 3. The Bears' 27 shots is the fifth-most in a single match since 2009, falling one short of the 28-shot mark set in the 2025 season opener against Oglethorpe. VMI's three shots is the lowest amount that Mercer has held an opponent to since at least 2021.
The Bears conclude their regular season with ranked Southern Conference foe, UNC Greensboro this upcoming Saturday at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Kickoff against the No. 18 Spartans is scheduled for 6 p.m.
