Bears drop nonconference matches against Wright State, Morehead State
MOREHEAD, Ky. – Mercer dropped a pair of volleyball contests to Wright State and host Morehead State on the opening day of the Comfort Inn-Vitational at Wetherby Gym on Friday.
Â
The Bears fell to 2-4 overall on the season with the pair of losses: 0-3 (18-25, 23-25, 24-26) to Wright State and 0-3 (19-25, 20-25, 13-25) to Morehead State.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ (Wright State)
Set 1 (18-25) |Â Emilee Wissmach opened the match with a service ace for the Bears. Wright State then jumped to an early 8-3 lead before the Bears battled back to a three-point deficit at 16-13. The Raiders would maintain control however, pulling away and claiming the opening set, 25-18. The Bears recorded five kills in the first period, led by Paige Alsten (2).
Â
Set 2 (23-25) |Â The second set was a back-and-forth battle as neither team was able to gain more than a four-point cushion. The period featured six lead changes with Wright State eventually pulling away after tying the set at 21-21.
Â
Set 3 (24-26) |Â Much like the first set, Wright State gained early control with a 6-3 advantage. Mercer trailed in the set until a Roberta Todd kill knotted it up at 12-12. The Bears maintained a tight lead until the momentum shifted once again with the Raiders tying the set at 23-23. Mercer battled hard but fell short as Wright State took the third set, 26-24, to close out the match.
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ (Morehead State)
Set 1 (19-25) |Â Brittany Major was set up by Molly Hackett for a kill to give Mercer the first point of the opening set. Mercer jumped out to a 10-6 lead before the Eagles battled back to tie it, 15-15. Morehead State finished the set by outscoring Mercer, 10-3, down the stretch.
Â
Set 2 (20-25) |Â Mercer took an early 6-3 advantage behind kills from Roberta Todd and Paige Alsten. Morehead State tied the set, 8-8, before taking the lead for the remainder of the set. Even with a late four-point run, led by Todd, the Bears were unable to pull within a point of the tournament hosts.
Â
Set 3 (13-25) |Â Alsten and Todd led Mercer in the final set with two kills apiece despite the loss. The Bears claimed a quick two points to open the set, but Morehead State quickly gained control for the remainder.
